CNC Machining RFQ Guide: What to Send for a Comparable Quote

A quote is only comparable when every supplier receives the same manufacturing definition. Use this checklist before sending a drawing so the review covers manufacturability, cost and quality requirements together.

Send the technical definition

  • 3D model in STEP, STP or another agreed neutral format
  • 2D drawing with units, datums, tolerances and critical dimensions
  • Material grade, temper or condition, and stock or finish requirements
  • Part quantity, prototype quantity and expected repeat demand

State quality and delivery requirements

  • Flag critical-to-function dimensions and inspection method where known
  • List required dimensional, material, surface or hardness reports
  • State surface finish, color, coating or passivation requirements
  • Give the destination, packaging constraints and target date

Ask for a decision-ready quote

  • Request assumptions, exclusions and proposed substitutions in writing
  • Ask which features drive setup, tooling, inspection or finishing cost
  • Compare prototype and repeat-production pricing separately
  • Confirm what is included before approving production
