Precision EDM machining cell for wire and sinker electrical discharge work

Electrical discharge machining removes metal with controlled sparks instead of cutting tools, which is why it reaches where milling and turning stop: hardened steel after heat treatment, carbide, thin walls, sharp internal corners and deep narrow slots. EDM is specified per feature on the drawing and quoted together with the machining operations around it.

Three processes cover most needs. Wire EDM cuts profiles and tapers through the full workpiece with a traveling brass wire. Sinker EDM burns cavities and pockets into hardened steel using a shaped electrode. Hole-drilling EDM machines deep, small-diameter start holes at high aspect ratios.

Capabilities

  • Wire EDM profile and taper cutting of hardened steels and carbide
  • Sinker EDM for cavities, pockets and ribs in hardened tooling
  • Hole-drilling EDM for deep, small-diameter start holes
  • Sharp internal corners and deep slots that cutters cannot reach
  • Machining after heat treatment, with no re-clamp distortion
  • Dimensional inspection report with every order

Typical materials

EDM works on any electrically conductive material: tool steels (D2, A2, H13) in hardened state, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, copper, carbide and titanium.

Finishes

EDM surfaces carry a fine recast layer that is typically left as-burned on tooling or polished on sealing and forming features; finishing is specified per surface on the drawing.

Stress relief / heat treatmentRelieves residual stress before or after cuttingThin walls and tight tolerances that must survive machining

Tolerances

Wire EDM typically holds ±0.005–0.01 mm profile accuracy; sinker and hole-drilling EDM hold slightly wider bands. Tighter values are reviewed and confirmed per drawing during quoting.

Ordering, Lead Times & MOQ

Custom CNC parts carry no forced MOQ; ordering from a single prototype piece is standard industry practice.

Instant-quote platforms publicly advertise prototype lead times of 1-3 business days.

Online RFQ is the industry-standard flow: upload a 3D model (STEP/STP/DWG/DXF), receive an instant quote or engineer review, then production, inspection, and delivery.

Frequently asked questions

When should a part use EDM instead of milling?

Use EDM when the material is already hardened, when internal corners must be truly sharp (a milling cutter always leaves a radius), for deep narrow slots, or for carbide that conventional tools cannot cut economically. Many parts combine both: milling for the bulk geometry, EDM for the features that need it.

Does EDM only work on hardened metal?

No. EDM works on any electrically conductive material, including aluminum, brass and copper. It is simply most economical on hardened steel and carbide, where conventional machining is difficult or impossible and the EDM slower removal rate is still the faster route.

What files do you need to quote an EDM job?

Send 3D CAD (STEP or IGES) plus a 2D drawing that states material and hardness condition, which surfaces are EDM, surface finish requirements after burning, and start-hole positions and diameters for wire threading. Our engineers confirm feasibility and the machining-versus-EDM split before quoting.

How does EDM accuracy compare with CNC machining?

Wire EDM profile accuracy is comparable to precision milling — typically ±0.005–0.01 mm — and it can hold sharper internal corners because there is no tool radius to compensate. Sinker EDM depends partly on electrode wear and is quoted with the specific tolerance band per feature.

What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ)?

Prototypes from 1 pc. Low-volume production typical 50-500 pcs. No forced MOQ on custom parts; unit price drops with volume.

What is the typical lead time?

Industry benchmark: instant-quote platforms deliver prototypes in 1-3 business days. Our own production: prototypes 5-10 working days, including in-house QC and shipping. Production: 2-4 weeks depending on quantity/finishing. Express options exist; finishing adds days.

What tolerance should I specify?

Specify tight tolerances only on critical features. Standard ±0.1 mm covers most features. Tighter tolerance = cost multiplier; apply selectively via drawing GD&T.

How is quality controlled?

First-article inspection in our own shop before the first production order. In-process checks. Final inspection report (dimensions) with shipment. Material certs (mill test reports) on request.

Is my design protected?

NDA before file exchange. Files used only for your production. No resale of custom designs.

Which material should I choose?

Function first: strength, weight, corrosion, cost. Common pairings: 6061 general, 304/316 corrosive env., PEEK medical. See materials guide pages.

Which surface finish do I need?

Anodizing for aluminum corrosion/wear/color. Passivation for stainless. Plating for conductivity/steel protection. Cosmetic vs functional distinction.

How do you ship and what terms?

DHL/FedEx/UPS express for samples and small batches. Air/sea freight for production volumes. Incoterms: EXW/FOB/DAP/DDP options.
