Hemming folds a sheet edge back onto itself — a closed, open or teardrop double edge that removes the raw cut, doubles edge stiffness and turns a sharp border into a safe one. It is the finish the eye reads as quality on appliance panels, enclosure lids, ductwork and automotive skin parts, and the detail the hand notices on anything a user touches.

The process has firm design rules. The fold demands ductility and flange length in proportion to thickness; thin sheet hems routinely, thick sheet cracks or warps; and the hem type — closed for stiffness and edge sealing, open with an air gap for handles and dissimilar-material joins, teardrop for curved edges — should be chosen by function, not by look alone.

Specifications

PropertyValueCondition
Min flange length ≈3× sheet thickness minimum; 4–6× recommended source worked instance: 0.030 in sheet wants a hem of at least 0.120 in; shorter hems run weak or springback-prone
Typical thickness window below 3 mm (typical); above 3 mm crack/warp risk hemming favors thin sheet; thicker material depends on tooling and design
Open hem thickness range 0.040–0.125 in open (air-gap) hem; standard gaps 0.06 / 0.09 / 0.125 / 0.250 in; formed by bending to about 145 degrees then flattening over a shim
Hem width tolerance ±0.010–0.020 in (typical) depending on the forming process; gauges and micrometers validate dimensions
Inside bend radius ≈1× material thickness (guideline) harder materials may require larger radii; radius controls material strain during the fold
Inspection tolerance ±0.1 mm systematic inspection with gauges and micrometers; edge smoothness and surface defects checked at each stage
Min hem width by tooling Not established in the collected evidence — confirm at quotation.
Lead time Not established in the collected evidence — confirm at quotation.
Suitable materials envelope Not established in the collected evidence — confirm at quotation.

Values above are rendered from the collected model-evidence layer, each carrying the heat-treatment condition it was reported under; fields without collected evidence are stated as not established rather than estimated. Requirements outside the table are confirmed for the specific geometry and batch at quotation.

Applications & Selection Points

Enclosures, panels and edge safety

Any edge a user can touch — appliance doors, HVAC panels, enclosure lids, signage — is a hem candidate: the fold buries the sharp cut edge and doubles the metal where stiffness is cheapest. A closed hem also seals the edge, which matters on outdoor and washdown products where a raw edge would corrode first.

Joining and assembly roles

Hems are also a joining feature: a hemmed flange crimps around wire, hinge stock or a mating sheet, and open hems accept a second sheet or a different material in the gap. Designing the hem as an assembly feature early is cheaper than adding a separate fastener later.

Choosing the hem type

Closed hems maximize stiffness and edge sealing but demand the most ductility; open hems with a standard air gap suit handles, thick-ish sheet and spring-back control; teardrop hems carry curved edges and tighter radii where a full flat fold would crack. The thicker or less ductile the sheet, the more the type choice matters.

When a hem is the wrong call

A hem costs material — the flange is real length consumed by the fold — and it needs bend relief where it meets other features. If the goal is only burr removal and the edge carries no load or touch requirement, deburring or edge rolling is the cheaper finish; if the geometry has no flange length to give, the fold is not available at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a hem flange need to be?

The rule of thumb scales with thickness: a minimum around three times the sheet thickness, with four to six times recommended for a durable fold. Shorter hems run weak or spring back; excessively long ones wrinkle or demand more forming force. On a thin panel this is a small number — which is why it is so often under-specified until the fold wrinkles.

Can my material and thickness be hemmed?

Hemming favors thin, ductile sheet; the process is most common below a few millimeters of thickness, and harder or thicker material raises cracking and warping risk. Aluminum, mild and cold-rolled steel and ductile stainless hem routinely; brittle or high-strength material needs a larger radius, an open or teardrop form, or a different edge treatment altogether.

What should I send for a hemming quotation?

The flat pattern or model with the hem type called out per edge, the material and thickness, the tolerance expectations on hem width, and the functional intent — sealing, joining or safety. The intent decides the type and the inspection plan; a cosmetic hem and a structural crimp hem are different quality targets.

Ordering & Documentation

Documents

Send a flat pattern or model with hem types marked per edge, material and thickness stated, and tolerances called out on functional hem widths. Bend reliefs and hem-to-feature clearances should already be in the pattern — they are the usual geometry blocker.

Quotation

A quote is priced from the hem count and types, tooling needs, material and thickness, downstream finishing and quantity. Two-stage hems and curved or robotic hemming show up as process steps; flag cosmetic surfaces so the inspection plan matches the expectation.

Process plan

Expect a pre-bend, then the flattening or rolling pass — staged angle progression is what prevents cracking on tighter folds. Inspection covers hem width against tolerance, edge smoothness and surface defects at each stage.

Sample & Supply

First articles validate the fold on the real material lot — temper variation shows up at the hem before anywhere else. Production runs hold hem width consistently once the tooling is proven; agree the cosmetic-inspection standard at quotation.
